OVERVIEW

Quadriceps Muscle Strains

Illustration of quadriceps muscles, including rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis, labeled for anatomy education related to quadriceps muscle strains and physical therapy treatment.

This injury is often caused by running sprints or stops that are too quick. A muscle strain can cause tenderness or a bulge in the tender area of your thigh. Lifting the thigh (a straight-leg raise), climbing/descending stairs or getting out of a seated place can exacerbate the pain.
